The International Coastal Cleanup keeps on growing its number of volunteers for the last 30 years. It’s always scheduled every third Saturday of September and aims to spread awareness in keeping our coastline clean and preserved for the generations to come.
SM by the BAY and SM Cares (under SM Foundation) have been joining hands together in celebrating this event with the international community for the past 4 years targeting an increasing number of volunteers year-on-year, encouraging more partner brands to join, be more relevant, and spread a massive awareness across the metro.
Over the years, SM Supermalls has been persevered in preventive measures and ensuring that each malls are eco-friendly. Monthly cleanups are being held at SM by the BAY lead by the mall’s Customer Relations Services group and other NGOs. There’s also a Trash-To-Cash program rolled out across all malls which encourages every internal group to be aware of the recyclables which can eventually be converted to cash.
Given its 1.55KM esplanade stretch, the mall was able to gather 1066 volunteers from different government and non-government organizations to join last year’s cleanup. Based in last year’s submitted Coordinator’s Ocean Data Trash Form, the batch was able to collect 109, 315.76 kilos of trash equivalent to a total of 734 garbage bags and sacks filled. In addition, the following items were identified to be the most number of garbage collected: beverage bottles, food wrappers, bottle caps, takeout containers, cups and plates.
Last year’s major partners were: Ocean Conservancy, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, International Coastal Cleanup Philippines, Philippine Coastguard Auxiliary, Pasay city Environment Office, Philippine Red Cross, SM Hypermarket, TRYP Hotel by Windham, Blackbeard’s Seafood Island, Maynilad and Waffles and Soda Corporation. This year, the team worked hard to spread awareness and gather close to 4000 volunteers. The theme for this year is a “Trash-Free Manila Bay”.
Ms. Earth winners and other eco-warriors will be gracing the program which will start at 06:00AM with the actual trash collection by 6:30AM to 7:30AM at the Central Park, SM by the BAY.
