DMC Arts & Crafts Day : Dare your Mind to Create Something You Love!

My mom introduced me to do crafts when I was in primary school. I learned how to do crochet, embroidery and cross-stitch. There are some days that I will just sit in one corner doing them, without getting tired, for the whole day.

Back in high school, my friends and I would just hang out after class and to do some embroidery stitches. In college, I did cross-stitch and some paper tole for friends. The last time I did a DIY project was on Gab’s second birthday. We were having a hard time thinking of what to get that is something useful, instead of the usual loot bags with treats, that I ended up making towel lollipops.

Still on my bucket list is to learn how to knit.

I was reminded of this when I attended the DMC Handcrafted event. Listening to stories of crafters on how they got started and how doing crafts changed their lives and the people around them is simply encouraging. Their advice are good motivations to kick start a happy year.

Meeting new and old friends. This bunch is composed of beautiful moms!

Among the 7 inspiring artists in their fields, my favorites are Karla Quimsing and Candy Reyes.

DMC Crafters

Karla is a poet and now makes dreamcatchers for her online store Damgo, which in Bisaya and Hiligaynon means dream. She’s based on Cebu but an Ilongga like me! I’m glad I had a quick chit-chat with her after the event. According to Karla, we all should, “Go for it. Be Adventurous. Create something that you love.” On the other hand, Candy is the creative mind behind Knitting Expedition which makes knitted products by locals of Mt. Pulag. She also works with the woman farmers of from Uhaj, Banaue.  I always admire people with an advocacy that shares knowledge and gives back to the community. Her advice is “Don’t be afraid to try something new. You can make anything with your hands as long as you put your mind to it.” Anyone, young or old, can learn a new skill and do crafts as long as they put their hearts and minds into it.

DMC supporting this and having a Dare your Mind to Create campaign. In connection with this, they are holding a 3-day weekend Arts and Craft Fair. This event is for those who are interested to start crafting and those who are already into crafting. The craft fair is on January 30 to February 1 at Century City Mall Event Center in Makati.

There will be workshops to learn knots and wraps from Mikko Sumulong of I Try DIY, knitting from Candy Reyes of Knitting Expedition, embroidery from Alessa Lanot of Life After Breakfast, crochet from Trey Ajusto of Gantsilyu Guru, string art from Marielle Nadal of Craft MNL and how to make your own dreamcatcher from Karla Quimsing of Damgo Cebu . The fair is also a venue to buy handmade pieces, learn new skills or get ideas for making your own little projects.

DMC encourages everyone to get those creative mind going and your skilled hands moving.

As for me, I have a DIY project to finish before the end of the month for a friend’s wedding and will soon start with knitting!
